2023: the Year of

by

I planned to start writing this post on New Year’s Day and have it posted by January 2nd, but I’m glad to be writing it now, on the 14th. I ended up spending the first few days of 2022 with my friend and her family in Michigan (New Buffalo area), which could not have been a more perfect reset. That delay showed me that abstaining from broad-stroke reflection and goal-setting until “settled” into the year helps me be more realistic with my annual ambitions, so I’ll aim to post these mid-to-late January moving forward.

The past and present

Me, January 3rd, 2022:

Inspired by the Cortex Podcast’s tradition of yearly themes, going into 2022 I decided to set a yearly theme for myself for the first time. Reflecting upon 2021, I’ve spent the year, largely indoors, thinking; of ideas for projects I want to build, aspects of my life that I want to change. My life could use some action. Not like, getting into gunfights action, some things just need to be done.
This year, there are several categories in which I want to apply the theme of “building”: projects, habits & routines, relationships & connections, and wealth. For each of these categories, I’ll talk about how I plan to approach related aspects of my life differently than 2021, and some goals I’m setting to keep me on track with my yearly theme.

I did not embody the theme of “building” as well as I could have, and while I don’t have strong feelings toward that fact, I do have a few thoughts:

  • While I refuse to be mediocre, I also refuse to put unreasonable pressure upon myself and lose my teenage years in premature pursuit of success
  • I don’t feel like the year slipped away from me at all because I quite literally feel like I’m getting younger every week and I have exponentially more positive, “core” memories and valuable experiences
  • I’m no longer slacking, particularly academically (where I’m playing a lot of catch-up at the moment)
  • My ambition (in general, career-wise) and clarity on where I want my life to take me seem to have a somewhat inverse relationship — which I think is not only a normal thing but a good one at this point in my life and not a point of stress for me.

The future

I’m skipping on a yearly theme this year gasps /s.

Allow me to remind you of this great illustration by Tim Urban:

Tim Urban’s illustration of life paths

A yearly theme is directional; “I want this aspect of my life to move in this direction”. The beauty of yearly themes is that the aspect and direction part can be as broad or as narrow as you want. In terms of the illustration, if the beginning of the year is that green dot in the middle, a yearly theme should guide you toward a region of paths; “When I reach the red square’s domain, I want to be within the red square’s range”.

I don’t know how far I want to veer left or right, though, so I don’t think yearly themes make sense for me right now. I explored the idea of doing something to the effect of “the year of finding myself/clarity” but that wouldn’t be honest as I don’t necessarily intend on embodying a self-discovering spirit or want to do so.
